US 101 Mid-County Multimodal Corridor Strategy: Draft Existing Conditions Report

The TA is accepting comments from December 18, 2024 to January 10, 2025

The San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) is developing the 101 Corridor Connect Mid County Multimodal Strategy which will identify underfunded but necessary projects that improve and encourage the use of different types of transportation. The Mid County includes the cities of Burlingame, San Mateo, Foster City, Belmont, San Carlos, and Redwood Shores (Redwood City). The project includes a one-mile study area along both sides of the corridor to identify projects that can be considered for inclusion in the funding strategy.

Below, you can view the Draft Existing Conditions Report and provide input. The report is a summary and assessment of existing conditions from the perspectives of the transportation networks, the population and socioeconomic characteristics and the travel patterns of the residents and workers in the Mid County corridor.

Also located in areas with high injury network roads

Question
This sentence is a little confusing with wording. Transit is used four times, not sure if that's necessary. Also, does "Transit Disadvantaged" mean like seniors, persons with disabilities, low income residents? Other than shuttles, are there really any other 'transit services' other than Caltrain?
replies
Suggestion
Should reach out to Jonathan Steketee in SamTrans Ops Planning for latest data/stats, think recovery is higher now
replies
Suggestion
El Camino Real is also a barrier to east/west travel for people walking/rolling/biking due to lack of safe infrastructure
replies
Question
Is it possible to also discuss traffic operations improvements that could increase safety? Transit/HOV lanes have been shown to reduce certain collisions such as sideswipes and rear ends; also boarding islands have benefits to operations and ped safety. Let us know if you want to discuss.

Suggestion
Would be good to clarify this as Palo Alto Transit Center, since it's a vital connection to Caltrain, VTA, Marguerite, DBX, other regional services
replies
Suggestion
Might be good to reclassify the service frequency other than 'every 30 minutes'. For example, that's true at most stations but in San Mateo and Hillsdale they get 4x trains/hr (not necessarily every 15 min). 4x trains/hr does show a difference between the 2x trains/hr every 30 min.

Suggestion
Should also add route CSM (launched Aug 2024). Would be good to check in with Jonathan Steketee in SamTrans Ops Planning that all these are up to date
replies
Suggestion
Should be "Mid County" throughout doc for continuity
replies
Question
What about Holly Street, Brittan Avenue, Industrial Road, Old County Road?
replies
Suggestion
Land uses, destinations, and density are not discussed in this report (as far as I can tell). I think it would be worthwhile to include some discussion about the connection between land use and transportation, and how density can support increased multimodal travel.

Redwood Shores is in the jurisdiction of Redwood City; suggest adding a footnote if tables will reference Redwood Shores as a jurisdiction.

Question
Is there an overlap between the HIN and existing bike/ped facilities? Are existing facilities inadequate or are HIN roads lacking in facilities?
replies
Suggestion
Typo - disproportionate

Question
Are there any streets that standout for ped/bike KSI crashes compared to vehicle only?

It would be helpful to have labels on this map (and others) of the key streets
